DL&W 896 |
| Description: |
A very nice surprise caboose DL&W 896 on display and has many spectators and visitors. This was originally was a coal and water tender on the DL&W in the mid 1920's. It was built by ALCO. Towards the end of World War 2, The DL&W began repalcing its steam locomotives with diesel engines. Steam power was being sidelined 1950's. About that same time the DL&W was seeking new steel cabooses that could withstand the force of heavy "pusher locomoives coupled behind them on steep grades. Employees of the DL&W keyser Valley Shops iN Scranton, PA, built a new class of cupola cabooses and 896 was reelased in May 1954. Source brochure for this event. water tnder |
